Access to safe water remains a daily challenge for many vulnerable households in Mata Sector, Muhanga District, Rwanda. Women, girls, and children often spend significant time walking long distances to collect water for basic household needs. Some families also depend on unprotected water sources that expose communities to preventable waterborne diseases. Earth Resilience Initiative proposes the establishment of a community-managed rainwater harvesting and safe water access system equipped with a 5,000-litre storage tank, roof catchment infrastructure, filtration support, protected taps, water quality monitoring, and safe-use awareness measures. The intervention will also include environmental restoration activities such as tree planting, protective greening, and the development of a small resilience garden. Beyond improving water access, the initiative seeks to strengthen climate adaptation, protect public health, reduce the burden on women and girls, and promote sustainable community ownership.
